It did not provide further details on the claims, and it was also unknown if the threats were new or repeated ones.

The Iranian government was not immediately available for comment but has in the past denied allegations of meddling in US affairs from Washington.

Trump tweeted that he has “very big, very powerful” threats by Iran.

He also said an attack on him was a “death wish by the attacker,” and he went out to issue his thanks to Congress for authorizing additional spending on top of regular appropriations for the Secret Service.

In the statement, Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung said: “Intelligence officials have identified that these continued and coordinated attacks have grown in sophistication over those presented to WaPo.”

“Law enforcement is working together at all levels and partners to keep this Election and President safe,” he wrote.
